“The Tattooist of Auschwitz” is based on Heather Morris’ 2018 novel. It recounts the true story of Lali, a Slovakian Jew deported to Auschwitz in 1942. He is tasked with tattooing identification numbers on his fellow prisoners, where he meets Gita, and together, they navigate the horrors of the camp, vowing to survive for each other. Furthermore the series also explores Lali’s later years as a widower in his 80s. He recounts his and Gita’s story to a young writer, portrayed by Melanie Lynskey.

The series features Jonah Hauer-King as the young Lali and Harvey Keitel as his older counterpart, with Anna Próchniak playing Gita.

Claire Mundell, executive producer for Synchronicity Films, expressed her gratitude and excitement about Streisand’s involvement. “Barbra Streisand is one of the most renowned artists in the world, and we are deeply honored to be working with her,” Mundell stated. She described the recording session with Streisand at Abbey Road Studios as an “unforgettable moment” and a “treasure forever.” The session was conducted by William Ross with the London Symphony Orchestra, Mundell concluded, “We are thrilled to be able to honor the memory of Lali and Gita in this way, with this beautiful original piece of music that perfectly encapsulates the key message of the series — love will survive.”
